A cracked in-ground light lens is enough reason to take the fixture out of service, even when the lamp still illuminates normally. The crack determines whether to stop using it; the condition of the housing determines how much needs replacing.
Isolate the lighting supply from a dry, accessible location and keep people and pets away from the damaged lens. Water protection and glass strength are both in question. Waiting for rain, flickering, or a breaker trip adds exposure without helping you decide whether the glass needs attention.
A compatible lens assembly may restore a serviceable fixture. Before ordering one, establish whether its retaining ring, gasket seat, and housing can still support the intended repair.
Why “Still Working” Does Not Mean Still Sealed
Do not use normal brightness as evidence that the enclosure remains sound. The lamp can produce light while the glass above it is cracked or its sealing interface is compromised.
The same limit applies to the fixture’s weatherproof rating. That rating describes the product in its intended, correctly assembled condition. It cannot confirm the protection of a unit with damaged glass.
A dry-looking lens offers limited reassurance. Moisture may not have entered yet, or it may be somewhere you cannot see. Neither possibility changes the visible defect. Once a true crack is identified, there is no need to wait for an electrical symptom before acting.
Crack Location and Water Path
Use crack location to direct the service inspection. After the supply has been isolated and the fixture has cooled, look from outside without touching or loading the glass. Notice whether the crack ends within the exposed face or continues to the perimeter beside the retaining ring.
A face crack concerns the glass barrier itself. A crack reaching the perimeter also draws attention to the edge where the lens is supported and sealed. Both require attention; their location does not establish a safe crack size or prove that water has already entered.

Rain, sprinkler spray, and water collecting over the fitting increase exposure to the damaged area. They do not establish the exact entry route. A wet perimeter, for example, does not show whether moisture passed through the crack, the gasket interface, or another opening.
If you can already see droplets, fogging, or sediment behind the glass, record those observations for service. Understanding visible moisture inside the fixture can help describe the additional problem, but clearing moisture would not make this cracked lens suitable for reuse.
Do not pour water over the fitting, probe the line with a tool, or press on the glass to see whether it moves. If you cannot distinguish a scratch from a crack without manipulating it, leave the fixture out of service until it can be assessed.
Foot-Traffic and Heat Risks
Switching off the light leaves the glass hazard in place. A lens can remain seated in its ring while being too weakened for contact, and a fine crack may conceal an edge that could cut someone.
Recessed installation does not automatically mean the fixture is rated to be walked or driven over. Even where the manufacturer specifies a load rating, that rating should not be treated as assurance for damaged glass. Do not test it with a shoe, hand, mower wheel, or vehicle.
Keep traffic away with a stable, visible barrier placed outside the fitting, leaving a usable route around it. A loose board or mat laid across the lens can hide the damage and encourage someone to step on it.
Heat requires a separate precaution. Surface temperatures vary with the light source and fixture design, so allow cooling according to the product instructions before approaching for inspection. Do not touch-test the lens or pour water onto hot glass. The crack’s appearance alone cannot establish whether heat, impact, or another condition caused it.
Temporary Shutdown vs Immediate Replacement
A controlled wait requires both an isolated supply and reliable protection from foot traffic. If either condition cannot be maintained, arranging prompt service becomes more urgent. A fixture awaiting compatible parts should remain off throughout that period.
Use the appropriate breaker or lighting-system supply disconnect from a dry, accessible location. An app command, timer setting, or photocell-controlled lamp being dark does not establish electrical isolation. A low-voltage label also does not make damaged or wet equipment appropriate to handle.
If you cannot identify or safely isolate the supply, keep clear and arrange professional assessment of the damaged fixture. The same boundary applies when inspection would expose fixed wiring or potentially wet electrical components.
Loose fragments, an exposed opening, or damage in a route people cannot avoid calls for prompt attendance and effective access control. If a protective device has tripped, do not repeatedly reset it to check whether the lamp still works.
Tape, household adhesive, epoxy, plastic wrap, and improvised caulk patches do not restore the specified lens assembly. They can obscure the damage while leaving its strength and weather protection unresolved.
Checking the Housing Before a New Lens
Check the parts that support and retain the glass before committing to a replacement lens. A distorted retaining ring, cracked housing rim, or damaged fastener attachment can prevent new glass from seating correctly.
Start with externally visible conditions. Inspection beneath the lens belongs within the manufacturer’s permitted service procedure, after electrical isolation has been confirmed. A sealed or non-serviceable fixture should not be opened experimentally. Fixed wiring, moisture around electrical parts, and uncertain access require qualified service.
During that assessment, the important checks are:
- Housing and retaining ring: No cracking or distortion that would prevent the approved assembly from fitting correctly.
- Lens seating surface: No chips, severe corrosion, or trapped debris that would prevent proper seating.
- Fasteners and attachment points: Able to secure the assembly as intended, without stripped or damaged threads.
- Replacement compatibility: The correct lens or cover assembly and specified gasket are available for the exact model.
- Moisture and exposure: Internal moisture, electrical damage, and persistent water exposure have been assessed before reassembly.
These checks establish whether a lens repair is plausible. They do not, by themselves, prove watertightness or authorize opening a non-serviceable unit.

When a Lens Assembly Replacement Fits
A lens repair makes sense when the manufacturer supports it, the housing remains serviceable, and the correct replacement assembly is available. Matching the diameter alone is insufficient. Glass specification, edge profile, gasket, retaining arrangement, and applicable temperature or loading requirements all matter.
Use the approved lens or complete cover kit, replacing the gasket as directed. New glass cannot compensate for a damaged seating ledge or a retaining ring that applies uneven pressure. Tightening fasteners harder cannot correct that mismatch and may place additional stress on the replacement.
When the Whole Fixture Needs Replacement
Complete replacement becomes appropriate when the specified lens repair cannot restore the assembly. A non-serviceable design, unavailable approved parts, or a compromised housing can lead to replacing the complete outdoor fixture. Electrical damage discovered during service may also expand the repair beyond the lens.
Persistent water exposure must be addressed within the installation’s design. Preserve intended drainage arrangements; do not drill holes into the housing or seal openings indiscriminately.
Authorize a lens repair only when the existing housing can support the approved assembly. Otherwise, replace the fixture. Keep the supply isolated and the walking area protected until the repair and any necessary electrical assessment are complete.
